Cloudflare Containers: 6x Faster Startup, Runtime Sandboxes

Cloudflare Containers just rolled out a major upgrade, and startup times are now 6x faster — welcome news if you run containers on Cloudflare.

There is more here than speed. You can now customize agent sandboxes at runtime, and filesystem snapshots have entered public beta. All of it is still managed from a Durable Object, so the control surface you already use does not change.

Cloudflare Containers: 6x Faster Startup, Runtime Sandboxes

What Happened

Cloudflare Containers picked up three things at once. Startup times are 6x faster than before. Agent sandboxes can now be customized at runtime instead of only at build time. And filesystem snapshots entered public beta, so you can capture and restore the state of a container's disk.

All of it is still managed from a Durable Object, the same way containers were handled before. There is nothing new to wire up on that side.

Why It Matters

Startup time is the tax on anything that scales up and down. At 6x faster, cold starts hurt less, and workloads that were too slow to spin up on demand start to make sense. Runtime-customizable sandboxes matter if you hand containers to agents or let configuration change per run, since you no longer have to rebuild an image just to change the setup. Filesystem snapshots in public beta are the piece to test carefully, because beta means the behavior can still shift.

If you already run containers on Cloudflare, this is worth measuring against your own workload rather than taking the 6x on faith.
