TSMC Arizona Ships Its First Batch of US-Made Chips

TSMC's plant in Arizona has shipped its first batch of chips made on US soil. It is the first commercial fab in the country to do it, and it moves chip supply chains out of a single-country story.

Taiwan still makes most of the advanced chips the world runs on. Arizona is the beginning of a second option, and it is being funded as a national security project rather than a quarterly profit play.

What Happened

Fab 1 in Arizona has its production ramped, with shipments now going out. Two more fabs are behind it: Fab 2 is under construction and targeting 2027, and Fab 3 is planned for 2028 and beyond.

The money behind it:

• More than $65 billion in total US investment.
• $6.6 billion in CHIPS Act subsidy.
• A target of 20,000+ high-skill jobs.

Why It Matters

For the defense and AI industries, a domestic chip supply is now a requirement, not a preference. Anyone building on top of advanced chips has a reason to care where they come from.

Taiwan remains dominant, and that is not changing soon. What is changing is that the US has started building an alternative, and the first Arizona chips are now out the door.
