OpenCode 2.0 Ships Background Tasks and Subagents

If you have been babysitting one AI coding agent at a time, OpenCode 2.0 has something to say about that. The open-source coding agent just shipped a large update, and most of it is about running more than one thing at once.

The change that stands out most: a task can start in your terminal, continue in the desktop app, and finish in the browser. Same task, different environment, no starting over.

OpenCode 2.0 Ships Background Tasks and Subagents

What Happened

OpenCode is an open-source AI coding agent, and version 2.0 pulls together a batch of features that were previously separate ideas:

  • Background Tasks let the agent keep working while you do something else.
  • Subagents spawn multiple agents so different tasks can run in parallel.
  • Terminal, desktop, and browser support means you can start a task in one place and pick it up in another.
  • Code Mode combines tool calls so the agent can handle more complex workflows.
  • Plugin hot reloading lets you rebuild a plugin and reload it without restarting everything.
  • SDK integration plugs OpenCode into your own projects and workflows.
  • Snapshots roll back changes when the agent goes too far with your codebase.

The cross-environment piece is the one the release leans on hardest. A single task follows you from terminal to desktop app to browser instead of being stranded in whichever tool you started it in.

Why It Matters

Parallel agents and background work change how you spend your own time — you stop waiting on one agent to finish before you start the next thing. Snapshots matter just as much, because rolling back is what makes it safe to let an agent touch a real codebase.

OpenCode is open source, so you can read the code and extend it rather than take the feature list on faith. If you already use an AI coding agent, this release is worth a look.
