How to Use Free AI Credits Without Vendor Lock-In

If you are collecting free AI credits, free VPS tiers, and no-card trials, the compute is not the hard part. Keeping your code portable is. This share walks through the three habits that let you take the free stuff and still walk away whenever you want.

The warning behind it: Android 17 quietly locking new APIs out of AOSP is a sign the open era is shrinking. Tie your core logic to closed vendor APIs, and you pay full price in technical debt instead.

Three Habits That Keep Your Code Portable

  1. Run your AI calls through an OpenAI-compatible proxy. The rule is simple: a 100M token grant should be swappable with one config line, not a rewrite.
  1. Take free VPS tiers and run raw Docker or stdlib binaries on them. Raw Docker and standard library binaries keep the machine plain, which beats a locked PaaS.
  1. Skip the vendor SDK and call the API over plain HTTP. Plain HTTP beats a heavy proprietary client library, and it is a lighter thing to keep working.

Wrapping Up

None of this costs you the free stuff. You still take the token grants, the free VPS tiers, and the no-card credits — you just avoid wiring them into the core of your project. Point your AI routes at the proxy, keep your compute plain, and the next grant becomes a one-line change instead of a rebuild.
