X Is Tracking Your Copied Links — Here's the 2-Second Fix
Copy a post link from X right now and look at the end of it. After the post ID there's a question mark, followed by a string of letters and numbers like ?a=uqa_a0BpGpaE4mGJaul&s=19. The post opens just fine without it. So what is it doing there?

What Changed
X has tacked share parameters onto copied links for years. The old ones looked like ?s=20 or ?s=46&t=.... In late October 2026, people started spotting a new, longer one: a=.
Warnings spread fast. A reminder from @affectlicious passed 1.3 million views in under a day, and similar posts went around in English, Arabic and Indonesian.
What Do s= and a= Mean?
X hasn't documented either one, so treat this as what users have observed, not an official spec:
s=is a short number that changes depending on where you copied the link. The web, the iPhone app and the Android app each give a different value.a=is the new long token. People report it only shows up when you're logged in, which suggests it can be traced back to the account that shared the link.
Put together, that lets X see where a link came from when someone opens it, and quite possibly who shared it.
How to Clean an X Link in 3 Steps
- Tap Share on the post, then Copy link.
- Paste it, then delete the
?and everything after it. - Send it. The post opens exactly the same.

After: https://x.com/leviackermanft/status/2115652166325338163Rule of thumb: keep everything up to the long post ID, drop the rest.
Don't want to do it by hand? Paste the link (or a whole message full of them) into our free X Link Cleaner and it strips the tracking for you, right in your browser.
Should You Worry?
The token doesn't expose your password, your DMs or your location. What it can do is connect a shared link back to you. If you drop X links into group chats, or send them to people who don't know your account, cleaning them takes two seconds and keeps that connection out of the picture.
X isn't the only app doing this. YouTube adds si=, Instagram adds igsh=, and Spotify adds si= too. The same fix works, with one catch: on a youtube.com/watch?v=... link, the v= part is the video. Keep it, and only delete from &si= onward.
FAQ
Does the link still work after I delete the extra part?
Yes. The post ID is all X needs to open the post. Everything after the ? is extra.
Does the author lose anything if I share the clean link?
No. The post opens normally and counts views the usual way.
Do I have to do this every time?
For now, yes. X adds the parameters on every copy, so it's worth making it a habit before you hit send.
