OpenAI ChatGPT Work Guide: A New Approach to Using AI on the Job
Still using ChatGPT only to ask questions, write messages, or summarize documents? OpenAI has just published a new guide for ChatGPT Work that argues there's a better way.
The guide is aimed at people who use AI on the job every day. It makes the case that ChatGPT should act as an assistant that understands the context of your work, not just a tool that answers your queries.

What Happened
OpenAI released the guide, called Design the work guide, to change how you use ChatGPT at work. Its core ideas are:
- Start with the task you are doing, not with the AI.
- Give the assistant the context, data, and constraints it needs.
- Let it handle workflows that take more than one step.
- Decide up front what a good output looks like and how you will review it.
- Shape the workflow around the kind of work you do.
- Try it once, then turn it into a workflow you can reuse.
- Use tools and capabilities to make the work run itself in an orderly way.
- Keep a human in the loop to review data, sources, and major decisions before you rely on the result.
Why It Matters
The strongest idea in the guide is a simple change of question. Don't open with "What can ChatGPT do?" Open with "What could I do better in my work?" — then find where the AI can step in. That is the difference between merely using AI and redesigning the way your work gets done with AI.
