Why Elon Musk Founds New Ai Company, Here's The Full Story
Why Elon Musk Founds New Ai Company - Elon Musk is going to battle with Sam Altman and OpenAI
He cofounded the company 8 years ago but now he's suing it
How did things get to this point?
Here's the full story:
In 2015 Elon cofounded OpenAI alongside Sam Altman and 20 others
It was originally as a non-profit and didn't accept any investments — only donations
Cofounder Greg Brockman said it "needed to be a non-profit, without any competing incentives to dilute its mission"
OpenAI's mission is "to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity"
Originally, this meant keeping AI away from centralized control
At the time, the biggest risk of this happening was Google since they own DeepMind and Google Brain
But Elon left OpenAI after just 3 years
It was reported that this was due to a conflict of interest with Tesla's AI work
But allegedly there was a power struggle within the company
Google had recently released Transformer, a new machine learning model
It made it possible to develop new AI systems much faster and at a larger scale than before
But, to do that, it needs a near-endless amount of data
Allegedly, OpenAI's founders were conflicted about what to do
On one hand, if they didn't use Transformer then beating Google to create AGI would be unlikely
But to use it they'd need much more funding than they'd be able to get from donations
It's unclear exactly how the decision was reached
But soon after Elon left, the company created a new structure that allowed for investors to make up to 100x their investment back in profit
By the next year they had raised $1 billion from Microsoft
OpenAI has gone on to raise $10 billion more from Microsoft
And they've used Transformer to build and release ChatGPT, the fastest growing product in history
Elon has taken issue with the "capped" profit structure
In his view, this means that OpenAI is no longer "open"
OpenAI was created as an open source (which is why I named it “Open” AI), non-profit company to serve as a counterweight to Google, but now it has become a closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft.
Not what I intended at all.

Critically, what happens after they return the 100x profit to investors?
If that happens, they'd have likely succeeded in creating AGI
Yet they wouldn't be beholden to anyone's interests but their own
They'd be the centralized entity they started out fighting against
To fight back, Elon has bought a ton of GPUs (hardware that's needed to run large AI systems)
And has started hiring a team of researchers to build their own models
He's called this "TruthGPT" and said its goal would be to understand the universe
At the same time, he merged Twitter's legal entity into X Corp, a new and mysterious company
He first had the idea while working on PayPal and has said he's "amazed" that no one else has executed the strategy in the last 20 years
X Corp will be a new answer to China's WeChat — a super app for "everything"
Chat, payments, and more with other services built on top
Elon has said Twitter is an "accelerant" towards launching X
With AI built in as well, it could compete directly with OpenAI's plugins
Are the GPUs for Twitter? Unclear
When will we learn more about X Corp?
Are they too "late to the game" to compete with Microsoft / OpenAI and Google DeepMind?
It's too early to say at this stage, but it's safe to say things are going to be exciting.
